80% Lowers can be made in many different materials that each have their benefits in ease of manufacturing and overall finish when complete. Particularly 7075-T6 Forged Aluminum is what the classic AR-15/M-16 were originally made out of. The suffix "-T6" is an indicator of how the Alloy was heat treated to give it improved strength and corrosion resistance, before bluing or finishing the lower with a cerakote or anodizing. Many 80% AR-15 Receivers will be made from Forged Aluminum 7075-T6, 6061-T6, and Composite Polymers. The lower receiver of an AR-15 is essentially the backbone of the weapon everything else is built off of, it is what makes an AR-15 a firearm. An 80% lower receiver is exactly what it says, it is a lower receiver that is 80% complete. By it being 80% complete it is considered a normal part and not a serialized firearm, so it is legal to purchase without the need of going through a background check or a local gun dealer.
